Yes, a phone with GPS capabilities is needed so that the companion app can start and stop workouts, track biometrics, measure and store data, track features like elevation and location, and play music during training. Vi will communicate this information to phones using bluetooth. However, the Vi device can still be used for biometric tracking when paired with smart and sport watches (and the data can be imported to the Vi app afterwards), or to listen to music when paired with music players. But without the Vi companion app, the full Vi training experience won't be experienced.
